The Removed
(102K), GM - July 3
|

|
|
Done on Cakewalk in about a week's work (hard work, though). Set
your EAX settings to 100% Cathedral Reverb and 0% Chorus. The
Cadenza soundfont works best for most of the instruments; however
a better choir patch is helpful, and a better bright piano patch
is critical (I used the Steinway Bright Rev from the Steinway
Grand Piano 29 MB soundfont.) This is meant to be film style music.
It describes a ghost, removed from reality. First the music describes
its world, then an encounter with this ghost. This is a short
piece (about 4 minutes), but hey that's my style! (or perhaps
my laziness). FORMAT: GM

Story Teller
(29K5), GM - July 6
|
000
|
|
Storyteller
is a composition which history runs back five years ago. The idea
for this complex work came from telling a story: how we exchange
words, emphasise, phrase, repeat, acknowledge etc. Although the
author didn't become a monk for it, it took certainly at least
3-400 hours of hard work. Category: piano miniature. Format: GM.
Technique: The composition has been rarely played in keyboard,
rather frequently manually altered in many different MIDI programs.
Additionally to musical content, many features have been added
to make it sound as natural as possible, as it has been recorded
from the audience. Since it is mainly piano with several additional
stuffs that support the basic tone, it is playable with any sound
card. It simply sounds very the same since piano has a very good
emulation in almost every modern sound card.

Title
of Piece: Presto (Oboe Sonata No. One) Arr. for Orchestra. Comments:
It was suggested that I do an orchestrated version of my oboe
sonata, which I have previously submitted. I have orchestrated
the first movement (and the others, but because of lengthiness,
only the first is being submitted) to enter in this midi-contest.
It is a radical interpretation of what I had previously laid down
as a solo piece, and now has a completely different atmosphere,
but I like it, and i hope you do oo. -Here's my presto.

Adagio Fugatum

The
title is Adagio Fugatum (opus 53). Category: classical. Format:
MIDI1, is that GM. I composed it using a mouse and Cakewalk Express
and I use a sound module, Roland soundCanvas SC 88 Pro, to make
it sound. Because most people use another sound device the music
has been mixed using a SB LIVE with an 8 MB emu soundfont. Gary
Frye did this for me: mixing and adding realism, because I hear
too badly.

Piano Fantasy
1991 (113K), GM - July 12
|

|
|
I
composed 'Fantasy for Piano, No. 1' in 1991 after spending years
writing in a strict classical style. At that time, I was looking
to write something a bit more expressive without any real form
or structure. This was also one of the last classical works I
completed before spending the next several years writing jazz
compositions, as well as some jazz-classical hybrids. 'Fantasy'
is basically a collection of themes that may appear to be thrown
together haphazardly, but they are all tied together into one
work as some of the themes are re-introduced, mostly in variations.
In a way, you could probably call this work a "super-extended
rondo-sonata". It's also a long work (about 13 minutes) written
without a definitive key signature and this adds to the "free
flight of fancy" as what defines a fantasy.

This is my last work, I hope you like and that my love communicates you for the music of the past, to which tradition and science I humbly bow me. My hope is to gather the crumbs to give joy to me and those people who want to relive such music from new lifeblood, in this convulsive and voracious historical period that everything devours. |

For
Merlin 2.2. No reverb and chorus needed (if you use that soundfont.).
You may want to turn up your bass. The is a remake of one of my
oldest compositions, the first of my compositions that I think
was any good. All I did was to change the instrumentation to add
realism. The original was improvised for the most part. It was
created for a small town in a video game, where the natives are
a bit touched in the head. The atmosphere is designed to impress
upon the player just how weird these people are, and it fits perfectly.
Some love this, while others cry out in pain when they hear it.
You'll have to make up you're own mind. : )

Name:
"Hei rakas! (kaikkea muuta kuin rakkauslaulu)" or "Hey
Dear! (everything but a love song). This song is quite straight-forward
three-chord-rock. I wrote it to these lyrics I got from a friend
of mine, and I felt that the rather "anarchistic" overview
on the lyrics need a piece like this to support it. I think the
story pictures a relationship that is going to fail, one person
isn't that interested anymore about the weird stuff the other
is telling him/her. I used a Korg synth module with Evolution
Audio -sequencer. Preferred instrument would be on the GM-GS axis.
If you're using a Sound Blaster Live, the supplied 8 meg sound
font sounds acceptable with this one.

Presto for Strings (34K7), GM - July 23

A
Scherzo for strings in c-minor based on a 8 bar long most simple
sketch which Beethoven wrote for his planned stringquintett a
few weeks before his death - running, almost equal 1/4 notes in
the violins, ansered by the knocking "fate motif" in
the bass. I open the movement with this sketch and develop from
it a furious Presto. The middle part is a contrasting calm and
melodious Trio.

The
movement (Ab Major) has quite an extensive structure: I. A. Adagio
cantabile theme group with a very tranquill and peaceful mood
(b.1-28); B. Andante theme group (b.29-56) based on Beethoven's
sketched Andante motif of 4 bars (b.29-32) for a second mov. for
his planned Tenth symphony; II. variation of the main theme (b.57-73);
III. recapitulation/variation of I.A. and B. (b.74-127); IV. reminescence
and variation of first movement's main theme, first melancholic
then desperate (b.128-183); V. various variations on the Adagio
main theme in a very melodic and jubilent way (b.184-248).

Fugue
Fantasy for Violin and Piano in A" Written on Wednesday,
July 24. I thought I'd try my hand at a simple fugue, given that
the form seems to have attracted so many of our participants.
It might even be playable - but no guarantees. Uses the latest
Merlin 2.2 soundfont for the violin, and you should get hold of
a good grand piano soundfont as well to give it any justice. Suggestions:
Concert Hall EAX setting, SB Live! soundcard, GM, and spinning
electrons (optional).

Symphony#1,
second movement - Andante. Uses the latest Merlin 2.2 soundfonts
for the flute, oboe, french horn, and slow strings - the rest
of the parts use the default 8mb fonts that come with the SBLive!
card. Use at least Concert Hall EAX/reverb setting. This second
movement has a pastoral feel to it, with a more introspective
middle section that is (hopefully) merged with the ritornello
that rounds out the piece to a peaceful conclusion. Best heard
with a glass of Sabatucci Primativo, the mother of all Zinfandels
(literally, the mother vine from Italy. Really. I wouldn't joke
about such matters. Ask Giorgio.)

messed it up a little on my MIDI player. The composition sounds

Noteworthy
Composer (registered), entry by PC keyboard into sequence and
heard on Merlin 8meg Soundfont through SB Live! This composition
follows a semi-abandoned school of the classical genre, "Polystylism"-
a term coined by Russian/Volga-German Alfred Schnittke. It involves
a confusion of periodic events in music history. At times it comes
near to atonality, at others it sounds like Bach, and others yet
the romantics or impressionists and expressionists. Essentially
it is the art of imitating styles but arranging them into a way
that sends a powerful message.
