| PROF | COMPOSITION | SCORE | COMMENTS | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Elevation | 7.00 | The main theme is very beautiful, but it can't really unfold it's beauty because it is interupted always with some harsh changes in harmony and instrumentation. I would have developed it more and more towards a jubilent climax. | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | The 60s Blues | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | Gaspains | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | Red Islands | 6.00 | I like the basic accompaniement (guitar pattern and bass) but the rest is not too exciting. | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Piano Concert 1, mov 2 | 7.00 | This concerto movement doesn't really exites me. Really touched I was only at the most beautiful solo piano part at bars 45ff. | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Altman Sonata for piano | 10.00 | Just brilliant! To me one of the highlights of the contest! What a power is displayed here! Beethoven's Waldstein sonata is greeting us... Especially the energy packed parts after the opening theme and the fugato take away my breath! | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Friday's Waltz | 6.50 | A simple but cute waltz with a nice tune and harmony. Why didn't you develop it more with some 1/8 notes in the right hand or some variety in the left hand? | ||||||||||||||||||
| D | Alien Wars | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | Funk (A Brief Insanity) | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | Piano Concerto #6 Mov3 Op38 | 8.00 | A brilliant movement, eventhough the other movements of this concerto, which I heard before at another website, I like better. The structure of the movement is not so clear to me. Very beautiful and passionate are the parts of bar 22ff and 68ff. | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Accordions Duet Op42 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | Trio No 1 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| D | Battle of Fleetzan 2002 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | Horses of the Time | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | Standing Man | 9.00 | This little piece of music touched me very much - inspite of it's simplicity, maybe even because of it. A beautiful melancholic melody, tender harp accompaniment and a wonderful countertheme in the English horn. Then the effects with the timpani and the bell. This would be a wonderful soundtrack in a Clint Eastwood Wildwest movie or so! I am very moved! Why is it so short? | ||||||||||||||||||
| D | Walk of the Grave | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | The Eagle and the Child | 8.50 | It conveys a beautiful tranquill athmosphere. I like it very much, especially the wonderful simple tune of the pan flute | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | Mary Edna | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | Never Again | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | Piano Studio 3 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | A Strange Song | 7.20 | very nice accompaniment, especially from b.33ff. The main melody, however, is not too attracting to me. | ||||||||||||||||||
| C | Handel's Great Drunk | ||||||||||||||||||||
| D | Reinvent | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | Circa 21 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | Sister Ann Joins the Carnival | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | Hungry Heart | 1.00 | chaos.... | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | Pilate Shrugged | 4.00 | The piece to me has no attractive main melody and it suffers much from the harmony with it's many empty quints and 5th parallels. | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | I Am Myself | 9.00 | Really, there is something of the Beatles' Stg. Pepper around this song - I love it! Melodies, arrangement and the harmony are great! Just my taste! The chorus theme is very catchy (but is very much alike a phrase in a song that was a hit in Germany in the 70's, "Sieben Bruecken..."). | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Shadowplay Waltz | 7.50 | A really good Russian waltz. I like the melody, the energy of the piece and the effects in the instrumentation! But I think the instrumentation is also a bit rough. I wishyou would have included also some more tender and lighter parts in the waltz | ||||||||||||||||||
| C | Entrance of the Scholars | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | The World is Round | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | Hallelujah Chorus | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | Chesh Lank | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | String Quartet mov 1 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | String Variations | 9.00 | Another highlight of this month's contest! How living and charming! The theme is just wonderfull in it's simple beauty. The instrumentation is brilliant. Especially I love variation "concertante" with the fast violins, the fantastic fugato and the minor part in bars 631ff. But even with all the beauties of the piece - it is just too long, especially towards the end. I would take out some repetetions | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | My One and Only Love | 9.30 | It is just beautiful - especially the first part with the fine and tender piano part! A bit of the sensitive atmosphere of the "Titanic" soundtrack. I and even my whole family were just thrilled by the beauty of this music. I wish you would find a record label to produce this song. | ||||||||||||||||||
| C | The Enchanted Storm | 9.00 | quite an impressive modern painting of a storm! | ||||||||||||||||||
| C | Dawn | 6.50 | The atmosphere of a dawn before a battle you want to describe is quite fittingly expressed, but I miss the catchy themes and moving melodies which could touch me emotionally any deeper. | ||||||||||||||||||
| D | Boris and Natasha | 10.00 | What a deep and expressive truly Russian music! I am deeply impressed and had to listen to it over and over again! Very beautiful melodies and counterthemes, very differentiated instrumentation (only the solo trumpet parts sometimes were a bit "thin"; there I would use also a 2nd trumpet) and most espressive harmonies. I wonder whether this was written by a Russian! The climax in b.111-118 was like a revelation to me! I dare to say: This to me is maybe the best contemporary orchestra work in a Neo-Romantic style which I know! | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Scherzo on Bee 10 | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | End of the Storm | 4.00 | no real themes and quite unskillful harmonisation and instrumentation in the second voice | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Symphony 2, mov 1 | 7.50 | At first I found the piece rather boring, but listening at it again I began to see some interesting parts. By now I like the work. It reminds me a bit of C.Franks d minor symphony. The somewhat depressed atmosphere of the movement however is always pretty much the same. I wish there would be some stronger releases of emotions and some faster parts | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Symphony 2, mov 2 | 8.20 | This movement I like better than the first one. There is more drive here what I somewhat missed in the first one. Especially I like the part in bar 182ff and the following fugato. In the instrumentation many times the voices play the same notes (or unisono), so the impression sometimes is a bit void and hollow. | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Gran Ciaccona | 8.00 | The piece is beautifully and most skillfully worked out, but unfortuneately it reminds just too much to the canon from Pachebel. So I can't give more than a score of 8. | ||||||||||||||||||
| A | Concert 43, mov 1 | 9.30 | Wonderful! Very melodious! Brilliant treatment of the clarinett, especially in the development. I love both the c minor main theme and the second theme! Right after hearing this piece I had to listen to Mozart's corresponding Concerto KV 622 - you really don't have to hide behind that one! The only thing I miss a bit is a more individual use of the string voices. Mostly they are playing pretty much alike. Some polyphony here would enrich the piece very much | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | Veliki Traven | ||||||||||||||||||||
| C | Astro Odyssey | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | The Proposition | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A | Fantasia | 8.20 | Could be quite a brilliant piece of music, especially with the magnificent countertheme in 1/16 notes from bar 9ff. But I could not get along with the instrumentation, especially in the second half with many multiple notes. After I changed all voices to piano voice I began to like the piece. | ||||||||||||||||||
| B | Rock on the Town | ||||||||||||||||||||
| B | Chinatown | ||||||||||||||||||||
| TOTAL AVERAGE | 7.49 | ||||||||||||||||||||
