CLASSICAL
THE OTHER SIDE - 8
Very nicely orchestrated at the opening. Each instrument has something
to say, but doesn't interrupt the others - just adds to the
conversation. Later on, instruments carry the same melody a bit much and
the conversation dies down a bit. I would like to have heard this
developed a bit more into a longer piece.
SCHERZO FOR PIANO - 9.7
Wunnerful! The only constructive criticisms I can offer are that the
tempo hovers around impossible at times and it sounds as if a bit more
legatto here and there would have sounded better.
OVERTURE OP 31 - 9.4
Lovely piece. A bit more legatto in places and more attention to timing
would have bumped this score up. SEQUENCING TIP: Believe it or not,
emphasis can be added to a hit by making the note/chord a dotted one.
It's counter-intuitive, but lengthening a hit a bit instead of having it
stocatto can give it more punch by giving it more presence against other
notes. The only thing I can add is that this goes on a bit long for an
overture. The listener is challenged to remain interested and surprised
when pieces are this long, and it begins to sound padded with repeated
passages that say nothing new.
DARING - Recuse
This works surprisingly well as an improvisation. There are a number of
ideas that could be pulled out and made to stand alone. Being an
improvisation, it does wander a bit.
THE AUTHORITY - 9.1
I think this is best imagined as a cinematic piece. Again, I don't take
category into consideration in scoring (i.e. I don't take points off if
the category seems wrong). Interesting composition!
METAMORPHOSIS - 8.1
5/4 time isn't easy to compose in. Nice job. Would you believe Dave
Brubeck had to fight to get "Take 5" recorded because it was considered
too far out? There's a bit much repetitiveness in the piece in places,
which could be fixed with a bit more improvisation tossed in. The
repetitiveness detracts from the overall novelty of the composition.
SHORT PIECE IN D - Recuse
A SHAKER CANON - Recuse
This is an astoundingly creative and difficult melding of two pieces. It
didn't fully work for me so I've recused myself. It seems to me that the
"melody" line from Pachelbel's Canon was varied too much from the
original to achieve harmony. Congratulations on taking on an
extraodrinarily difficult project!
STARS, SUN and MOON - Recuse
OPUS 1537 - Recuse
CONCERTO 1 - Recuse
AVE MARIA - 7
I'm not sure I would have tried to undertake to sequence such a dramatic
song. This is enough of a novel interpretation to be worth the time you
spent. It remains a bit light throughout for the power of the original,
and could have benefitted from more expression. Still, it is a very
pleasant piece to which to listen.
ONE LAST WISH - 8.4
Very, very nice!
APRICOT PIE TOCCATA 2 - 6
I think this piece would have faired better had the steel guitar been
replaced with some other instrument. Its singular notes sound harsh
against the rest of the instruments which have a softer attack, though
that may not have been the case had the guitar been more active - some
sort of counterpoint arpeggio or the like. There is a bit much atonality
for my tastes. I kept expecting some of the nicer themes to take off but
they ran into a backwash of more experimental passages. The overall
effect, to me, was the loss of a unifying theme - which is not what I'd
expect from a toccata. Had the rest of the composition been more like
the last three minutes or so - which were very, very nice - I'd have
scored it much higher.
ALICE'S VACATION - 5
She left the restaurant? Did Ray stay at home in the bell tower? : ) I'm
not sure there's enough here to justify a 172k midi file. There are
several themes that could have stood alone and been worth developing. I
don't think I'm qualified to review something this experimental.
CINEMATIC
THE OTHER SIDE OF SPACE - Recuse
WONDER 2 - 5.5
I think perhaps a bit more variety in the percussion track would have
helped this a great deal, though I do like the mix of beat and
orchestration.
SUFFERING HEART - 6
I dunno. The tempo seemed a bit rapid for the tune. I think this piece
has lots of possibilities with some additional work. I'd suggest
swapping out the piano for other lead instruments here and there,
slowing the tempo and throwing in some percussion for emphasis. Work on
the ending as well. It just sort of dies. It sounds like this could be a
very dramatic composition. Nice work!
MARCH OF THE TIGERS - Recuse
3094 AD MOVEMENT 1 - Recuse
MARCH OF THE ANTS - 6
The chord changes didn't quite work for me but it was jolly to hear.
BUFFET FOR BRASS - 8
The snare roll is pretty much impossibly fast, but the rest is nice and
kept my interest throughout. Sequencing tip: Adding a grace note to the
start of a roll here and there can add punch where needed. Cute ending!
FOUNTAIN - Recuse
I could more easily imagine this as a classical piece, played more
slowly and more fully orchestrated. If it were mine, I'd keep it and do
that. (I do get the picture of stocatto strings for the water.)
POP - ROCK - RHYTHYM
JUAN CIRCLED - 7.5
Nicely realistic guitar strum. I'd have been tempted to use harmonicas
instead of the organ. The song has a very Dylanesque sound - like a 60's
folk rock song.
DAWN - 7
This is a very pleasant listen. More legatto in some of the piano and
other parts would have smoothed things out a bit. The piano part, I
think, could have benefitted as well from some changes in timing for
emphasis (bringing in some chords/notes earlier or later for empasis).
Nice tune!
THE WAY OF THE WORLD - Recuse
LADY OF THE AGES - Recuse
I think that rock is one of the hardest of all genres to write in midi,
with blues being in there as well. Perhaps it's because precious few
rock songs are written these days that are strictly instrumental, unlike
decades past. This piece isn't bad, then again it doesn't leap out as
being especially musical enough to stand alone as an instrumental. Not
having any vocals requires purely instrumental rock to have way far
above average musicality. You are to be congratulated on one of the
better original rock midis I've heard in a while.
THE ONE AND ONLY LOVE SONG - 9.3
I take it the love was unrequited. Taking off from my comments above,
this composition has more musicality to carry it off as a rock
instrumental. It has some of the flavor of a Santana or Eagles
instrumental passage. Nice work!
GROOVE MIX - Recuse
This started out nicely to my ears but got lost here and there. The
instrumentation and orchestration were top notch. The percussion track
has appropriately offset timing of hits. The pitch bends got a bit
overused and unrealistic sounding. I'd like to have heard more
expression in timing. I really did mostly like this piece, but don't
think I can give it a fair score.
BLUES/SWING
JUST FOR YOU - Recuse
STILL CARRYING THE TORCH - Recuse
COUNTRY and WESTERN
JAZZ
FRIDAY RAG - 6
Having to get up and work this Saturday morning, I have to say "Thanks.
I needed that." This a bippity boppity, jolly tune.
STRIKE ALLEY - Recuse
RAINDROP RAG - Recuse
This is a very nice ragtime piece which deserves a very great deal of
credit. We have to start separating categories for prizes, I think.
Though this is a great piece, it can hardly compete with the likes of
Once Upon a Time for overall effort, compositional skills and the like.
I can't give this a fair score on that account.
TECHNO - NEW AGE
LOST TIME - 9.2
This is nicely orchestrated but the orchestration loses some punch in
its lack of more volume dynamics. The percussion could have added
further punch. The composition is very nice and kept my interest
throughout. Very good piece.
TECHNOMICKEY - 8.3
Mmmmmmm. Nice opening that creates tension and anticpation. The
percussion track "gets the clap" a bit much, and the infection detracts
from otherwise excellent percussion work. Nice work. Holds interest and
is very listenable.
LIQUIDITY II - 7.6
TRAVEL TEA - 7
I think this would have benefitted from some additional orchestration.
It's pleasant, but the guitar sounds very alone at times.
EGYPNOTECHNIC - 8
I'm not much a fan of techno, but I liked this composition.
MASAMUNI - 6.8
This was very interesting when it was being inventive, but the main
themes got a bit repetitive. Very inventive piece!
AMBIENT
ONCE UPON A TIME - 9.9
Oooh! Ron's goose-bump scale kicked right in. Lord but this is lovely -
the kind of piece that makes me say "I wish I could compose like that".
The change to some odd percussion and discord where the flute comes in
was distracting and didn't seem to fit, but you brought it back to its
natural loveliness after that. Gorgeous piece. Excellent attention to
dynamics gives this work an uncommon emotional impact. This should be
part of a tutorial in building drama. I listened to the song repeatedly,
simply for the pleasure of it. There are maybe half a dozen midi artists
in the world that can write like this.
EARLY MORNING LIGHT - 6.6
The lack of legatto in the strings and guitar lends a choppy sound to
this piece. There is nice attention to the timing of notes in chords,
lending a more realistic sounding performance. Nice work!
ABSTRACT - EXPERIMENTAL
UNDERWATER FLIGHT - Recuse
I'd have put this under cinematic, but try not to put any emphasis on
the categorization of a piece in considering its merits. I can imagine
it as a sci-fi sound track. I didn't score it because it's a bit far out
there for me.
OTHERS/UNKNOWN
FOURTH ESTATE - 7
CATALONIA'S DANCE - 8
Ooooh! Grabbed my interest right away. I think some castanets would have
worked far better than the clap, or along with it, and finding the right
sound for some flamenco dancing feet for the percussion would have taken
it even farther as would some chords in the classical guitar instead of
single notes. Still, I can see Catalonia dancing her heart out.

The Other Side
8.1
Reminds me of "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" in the beginning. Expected
it to build into a climax, but it maintains the same feel throughout
which left me a bit disappointed.
Scherzo for piano op 39
8.0
If this is your first "serious piano piece" why are there so many tracks
defined for the rest of the orchestra? I don't get it. This tune flows
beautifully. Dynamic and fluid.
Overture op 31
9.7
I think in some spots, in the beginning, strings would have made it flow
better than with the woodwinds and brass you used... seemed like the
voices were a bit abrupt, however, this is one beautiful arrangement. I
think the "conversation" between the instruments is well timed, and the
harmonies are great. Very progressive and moved me.
Daring
8.4
At bar 32, The little piano ditty that jumps in reminds me a bit of
"Hocus Pocus" by Focus... heh.. very unexpected ragtime feel now and
then is a bit comical, I like it.
The Authority
8.5
Powerful indeed, but in my opinion, could progress into some mellower
parts, so the heavier dynamic parts would stand out more, and FEEL more
powerful, in comparison.. Just my humble opinion. I liked the piece very
much, aside from that.
Metamorphosis
8.8
Good description you gave for this tune.... Progresses well, and stays
interesting. I like the minor key latin feel, and the (as you put it)
disjointed sections. Very unique and interesting.
Short Piece in D
7.5
Didn't really stand out for me.
A Shaker Cannon
9.3
Exceptional work, this piece is dynamic, flowing, and I love the
melodies
Stars, Sun and Moon
7.5
Nice piece, but seems a bit too busy to me, and could have included some
slower parts, as opposed to the arpeggios throughout. Could use some
sound at the bass end of the spectrum, as well.
Opus 1537
7.6
Has some interesting parts, but 1) the arrangement sounded like the
instruments weren't suited for each other, and 2) the bass/rhythm was a
bit redundant.
Concerto 1 for Strings, Trio and Orchestra, andante
7.2
Nice pleasant tune, but didn't excite me much...
Ave Maria version 2
7.5
Although this is quite a beautiful piece, it puts me to sleep, and makes
me dream of sugar plum fairies.
One Last Wish
8.6
I suppose I like this piece so much because I love to play the classical
guitar, and intend on trying my hand at learning this piece.... This
could have used some backup instruments, but the simple beauty of the
guitar earns it an 8.6
Alice's Vacation

I cannot review this composition, as it is my own.

CINEMATIC

The Other Side of Space
7.0
Although I tend to like the strange ones, I think this one lacks
continuity, and doesn't seem to flow... not tied together as well as it
could be, and I know this composer understands how to do that...
Wonder 2
6.5
Again, another that just doesn't seem to flow for me.
Suffering Heart
8.5
I like this one... it's dynamic, and flows well. I played around with
the chorus, reverb, and pan, and I think more could have gone into this
kind of expression, because I was able to get a much richer sound
without changing a note, or a voice... just chorus and reverb, and
position of the instruments..... volume expression also could have been
used in parts where it builds.
March of the Tigers
7.9
I suppose for a march it's a good composition, but for a tune like this,
I think it's important to go for a realistic sound... and although the
flute is impeccable, the horns behind it sound like they're somewhere
else... nice arrangement, and kind of a happy-go-lucky feel to it.
3094 AD Movement 1
8.8
This one has some punch to it! ... changes flow well, but just a bit on
the choppy side, but the composition itself I think makes up for that...
Put some more effort into your expression (volume dynamics, for one) and
this would have qualified for the Masters Award for Top Quality.
March of the Ants
7.5
Well... I tried, but I just couldn't picture ants.... grasshoppers
maybe, but not ants.
Buffet for Brass
9.5
This is masterful! What a fat brass sound, and the harmonies... wow!
Fountain
8.1
A sweet, soothing melody, ... I replaced your harp on track 3 with a
nylon guitar and it didn't sound quite as muddy.

Juan Circled
6.1
This one scared me outta my socks when it jumped in so suddenly.... I
think there's potential here, but the strings and organ clash, and muck
it up, in my opinion. Melody is a little simplistic.
Dawn
9.0
Strange you placed this in Rock/Pop... I love the bagpipes!... .. then
when the piano comes in... very clean, smooth, and easy to listen to.
This song would work great as a theme song for a movie, or weekly tv
series. Exceptional arrangement.
The Way of the World
7.7
"Somewhat repetitive"... the composers own words.
Lady of the Ages
7.5
This one sounds just like "The Way of the World"....
The One and Only Love Song
7.0
The odd harmonies disturb me, and kind of drags a bit.. Too much going
on, so it sounds muddy... the lead is beautiful, the only saving grace
in this tune... I do like the vibrato on the flute with the organ...
they work well together
Groove Mix
8.6
Driving, punchy, and powerful.... I usually don't go for predictability,
but in this case, it made me want to pick up my axe and join in... neat
ideas here.... woke me up when I needed a jolt.

BLUES - SWING

Just For You
7.2
I like the jazzy chords... percussion track is a bit overpowering....
melody is weak
Still Carrying the Torch

Funkadelic Fusion on mushrooms. Way out there, and intriguing, just

Lost Time
6.5
Percussion isn't very catchy, and then when the music comes in, it's
muddy, and too busy. Simplify
Technomikey
7.5
I would have omitted the organ intro and started with the bass line....
building up, it sounds a little bit simplistic, the alternating bass
line with the saw tooth lead on top gets really redundant.. needs a
break but it never comes. Sorry, but this one, although arranged well,
lacks strength where it needs it most... composition
LiquidityII
8.6
Boy this one sounds like a tune I used to hear on the radio... what was
it... Very appropriate for this category, and demonstrates use of
sequenced patterns, and blends with other patterns.... melody falls off
a bit in a couple of places, but the harmonies, and the complex patterns
behind it keep it afloat. Sweet piano rides on top....Very dynamic
piece, and ends with a punch.
Travel Tea
8.9
Beautiful... I even played with the tracks, using harpsichord and
harp... interesting... *(was better with nylon guitars though hehe)
Egypnotechnic
7.5
Yeah, it's techno alright, but doesn't flow like liquidity... I do like
the LFO's, and the eastern melodies.
Masamune
7.6
Trippy... the arpeggios with the odd vibrato are interesting... but the
mixolodian runs down the scale muck it up a bit... Again, the LFO bass
sounds cool... I think there are some fantastic ideas here, but not sure
they should be used all in the same tune. heh..
AMBIENT
Once Upon a Time
8.9
Smooth and flowing, I liked the first part, but the break doesn't seem

Catalonias Dance
8.8
Another one with some fine guitar work. Percussion is well done, and
fits well.
Scores >= 9.0 are votes to the TQA.
Scores >= 8.0 I consider "high quality" compositions.
This month I will try to be more demanding for everyone than last one,
although the quality of the music here is amazing and getting better and
better. Sometimes I am not able to score less than 9 most of the music.
Most are really damn good! Therefore, I need to build a few relative
scores to sort the result.
CLASSICAL & ORCHESTRAL
The Other Side = 8.35
VERY nice and pretty melodies and harmonies.
Its weakness is to be too short, it does not develop enough to a larger
work, what is a pity because the so good melody calls for more.
Scherzo for Piano = 8.0
Some parts are Chopin similar. Its strongest point is the melody beauty.
Its weakness point is the lack of originality in my opinion and also it
is only a piano work which is always easier to compose using midi than
other works.
Overture Op 31 = 8.1
Simple and effective melodies. Some ones are VERY good and beautiful. In
matter of melodies, simplicity is gold. And this work shows it. Also,
excellent orchestration. A bit fragmented with great melodies just
joined without a real continuity or "story" behind. Some melody
fragments are clearly reflexes of some well known classical melodies.
Strongest point: the orchestration. Weakness point: several melodies
just joined resulting in a confused piece. What a pity. So good
melodies, so amazing orchestration, but joined in a confused way. Other
problem: the originality. I already had heard some of the melodies used,
primary in Russian composers Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky. Anyway, it has
a primary melody (not used very much, it should be more developed) VERY
good using a syncopation rhythm which reminds me Tchaikovsky. However,
notice, the worst is the mess. The themes and melodies keep changing
repeatedly without a sense of continuity.
Daring = 8.9
There is some Rachmaninoff behind the scenes here, undoubtedly, but
softer and mixed with some Debussy I guess. Very interesting. The music
is very nice to listen. Strongest points are the midi performance (like
a live effect) and the harmonies, subtle and very well concatenated.
Weakness points, well, maybe a little more action or melody variation
(more drama and less champagne) could increase the listening attention
and the music appeal. As midi work is fantastic. As music lacks some
shake effect. In some way, it is the opposite of the Overture above.
The Authority = 8.0
Dominance of expression (not dumb midi, but how to express something
through music). Cinematic background. More effects (and what effects!)
than music sometimes. Strongest point: the capacity to express
something, emotion, mood, atmosphere, a scene. Good dominance of
electronic sounds. Weakness: lack of a more elaborated music, from a
classical point of view. Excellent for a movie.
Metamorphosis = 9.0
Same characteristics as above, but with better melodies, more
concatenated so it can tell a story. It uses more repeated accompaniment
patterns, so it is able to keep the mood and the attention of the
listener very well. The end wasn't, the piece had no effective end. The
story is stiil open! Oh mum... I was scoring 9.5, but now....
Short Piece in D = 7.5
The orchestration could be improved. How to express using midi
instruments some musical idea? Very good chords and harmonies. The
melody is a bit simple. Could be more developed to achieve a start,
middle and end. The author has good ideas, but needs to work more to
translate them in music I guess.
A Shaker Cannon = 8.1
Wonderful orchestration and midi composition. Of course, it lacks
originality what gives me the hard decision of how much to score it.
Should I score it higher than an original work or not? 10 as music.
Stars, Sun and Moon = 8.9
Wonderful use of dissonant chords. This author has the seed of modern
music and style in his heart (or mind?). Beautiful, no other words.
Strongest points: chord progressions and harmonies. Weakness: the
structure; better and clear start, middle and end sections would
certainly improve the music a lot.
Opus 1537
I refuse.
Concerto 1 = 9.5
It sounds baroque. Using Merlin or 8M Plus sound font it sounds amazing.
Because of the instruments used (violin, viola, etc.) , it is very important to listen it using
an adequate sound font or the listener will not get it. Wonderful music.
Ave Maria
One Last Wish = 8.5
Let's dance!!!!! Hum... there is a Spanish blood here. What a pity, too
short! With a little more development and some variations, I would score
it easily more than 10! Maybe you need a day with 25 hours.
Apricot Pie Toccata = 5.5
I was not able to get the feeling of this music. I heard several
fragments of sounds joined without an idea of continuity of themes.
Alice's Vacation = 7.0
Same characteristics as above, with some better fragments but not
concatenated.
CINEMATIC
The Other Side of Space = 4.0
It really doesn't fit my taste.
Wonder 2 = 7.0
It starts suddenly, as it was in the middle of the music. Interesting
orchestration, some good melodies, good harmonies but repeats too much
some parts.
Suffering Heart = 8.5
I liked more in this piece the rhythm variations. Not much suffering.
March of the Tigers = 9.1
XG Circus Maximum!
3094 AD Movement 1 = 9.0
The midi aspects of the music could be improved and get better scores
from average listeners.
March of the Ants
I refuse.
Buffet for Brass = 8.5
Good melody and rhythm variations. Some melodies are very good and
others aren't. The brass instrumentation gives the piece an urban mood.
Very original.
Fountain = 8.0
The accompaniment is too much fixed, boring, always repeating the same pattern for
a fountain. The primary melody is a bit weird some
times, calling for a more clear idea of continuity. The instrumentation
sometimes is poor letting gaps in the music. More dynamic is needed.
POP - ROCK
Juan Circled = 7.0
The weakness point is the melody which does not express any emotion.
Everything can be good, but without a good emotive melody the music will
not be appealing.
Dawn = 8.2
The beginning sounds Scottish! Nothing against... :-)
The Way of the World = 8.0
Lady of the Ages = 7.5
The One and Only Love Song = 8.8
Very original.
Groove Mix = 8.9
Sounds familiar. James Bond would appreciate it.
BLUES
Just for You = 8.2
Still Carrying the Torch = 7.5
Some chords in piano are too bass and the effect is not good. When the
tone raises, mixing the instruments, it sounds very better. Simple
melody and effective performance together result in a good music
following a mood, but not enough to shake my inside.
COUNTRY & WESTERN
JAZZ
Friday Rag = 8.0
Maybe the performance could be improved, but the composition is clear,
effective and very good for listening. And isn't that the main goal?
Strike Alley = 7.0
Raindrop Rag = 8.8
Clear, simple and effective. Very good for listening. It doesn't shake
my taste, but it is very nice.
TECHNO & NEW AGE
Lost Time = 9.1
Technomikey = 8.8
Comparing this one with the others in this category, it repeats too much
some patterns only percussion based. Ok, it is techno, but lets create
more! Anyway, it shows a skilled composition using electronic and midi
equipment. The starting, using organ is very clever, because it creates
the surprise element, when changing instruments after a while. If the
percussion accompaniment was not so much repeated without variations, I
would score it higher.
Liquidity II = 8.5
I have the impression I have already heard this music several times in
some video games of race cars (the game is Top Gear, very similar).
Lacks originality. Is short. And have not variations in instrumentation.
Travel Tea = 9.0
Expresses a melancholic mood very soft and appealing. The more
interesting is that, sometimes, it has a baroque smell. Very good!
Egypnotechnic = 8.8
See Technomikey above. The same comments are valid for both.
Masamune = 9.5
The least I can say is Air flight Panic! I can imagine this music
playing in a action movie. Would be great.
Did the plane crash!? Original and strong orchestration! Maybe the midi
aspects could be improved.
AMBIENT
Once Upon a Time = 8.0
This guy might have a degree in orchestration. Strongest points: the
orchestration and the structure of the piece. Very weakness point: the
melodies could be better, because although the chords are very well
concatenated and the instrumentation is very skilled, the melody of this music doesn't help to build a
masterpiece, being really very boring and without any beauty. I think it
has a lot of mind work, but no heart, no soul.
Early Morning Light = 7.5
Finland! Well, at least in first chords. What a pity Sibelius is not
here to help ... ;-) Anyway the rhythm and the progression of the music
is very good. A bit short, it ends when I thought it would really start
and shake the walls!
ABSTRACT & EXPERIMENTAL
Underwater Flight = 8.5
Emotion with sound! Yes, my hair is up... you did it! Very good sound
effects. Well, at least, this is the abstract category. Sometimes a
rabbit do things he doesn't know are better than others. This is your
style!
OTHERS
The Fourth Estate = 6.0
Probably the music could be improved using more volume dynamic to avoid
the mechanical aspects of the piece. The result sounded too much
mechanical.
Catalonians Dance = 8.4
The chord progression and the primary melody could be better. The
orchestration is very good.

The Other Side:8.0
I liked parts of this, the melodies were lovely, but sometimes the piano
and the melody seemed to run out of time with each other. The string
parts went great, sounded really good. Some dynamic variations would
have helped this a bit.
Scherzo for piano:8.5
I loved the variations in the first 20 seconds. After a while I wanted
something else to happen, maybe some horns playing quiet chords.
Overall, this was really good. I would have enjoyed it more with some
more instrumentation.
Overture: 10.0
This instantly reminded me of Last Journey, the melancholy mood. I think
the bells should have been toned down a bit, they were quite loud. This
has great orchestration and instrumentation. I think it would be better
performed live, but it is one of the best pieces I have heard this
contest. Well done!
Daring:7.5
The violins were nice, but I thought the piano part sounded a bit heavy
in the bass line. This had some nice themes, but it didn’t seem to be
going anywhere, just to drift between parts. Interesting, but could do
with some work on dynamics.
The Authority:8.0
Wow, cool piece. Maybe by using less synths and more instruments you
could have added to the atmosphere. The string parts were excellent and
so was the timpani. I didn’t really understand that this was daunting,
but all the same it was a very nice piece.
Metamorphosis:8.5
I see what you mean about the changes, but I don’t think they’re sudden,
they are very well done. The piano goes well in the background and all
the parts go well together. Good music.
Short piece in D: 7.0
This sounded a bit jumbled in places, because there were so many synths
all playing different themes. I would advise losing at least one of them
to give a clearer feel to this. Good try, though.
Shaker Canon: 8.5
Oh my god! Is that the shaker song? We used to sing that at my school,
but I never knew it was called that! I love these songs, and they are
well arranged together. Great! Sadly, you lose a few marks for not
composing them yourself :)
Stars, Sun and Moon: xxx
My own composition.
Op.1537:6.5
This had a nice theme, it sounded very jazzy rather than classical. The
strings accompanying it were good, but maybe a fuller sounding
instrument could have been used. As it was it felt like it was hovering
between jazz and experimental.
Concerto 1: 9.5
This would be great played live. The cello is brilliant, keeping the
parts together. I especially liked the viola repeating the violins
theme. I didn’t like the continuous viola note at 2.20, but that’s my
only criticism. It also ended a bit suddenly.
Ave Maria:9.0
I liked the way the strings worked with the harp and music box. This is
a really delicate piece but I think maybe you could have changed the
mood of it, once or twice, and made it stronger and louder but still
keeping the soft tune.
Cinematic
The other side of space: 5.0
This created a good atmosphere of scariness, but the drums were really
annoying. After 5 minutes it was very boring.
Wonder 2:7.0
All the strings and synths got confusing quickly. There were almost too
many instruments playing, and I could hardly listen. It had a nice tune
but more dynamic variation was needed.
Suffering Heart: 8.0
The start of this was great, the strings came in smoothly and the piano
part was good. There were even dynamics! :) About halfway through, I
would have had the strings and contrabassoon playing a small slow piece
to give the piano a rest.
March of the Tigers: 8.5
This is a great march, especially the piccolo trills. I liked the
strange percussion in places and the muted trumpet. A good piece of
music and funny with it! Well done.
3094AD Mov.1: 8.5
In the first minute or so, some crescendos would have really built up
the atmosphere. I liked the parts where the drum played on it’s own, it
gave a really effective ‘battle’ sound. At 2.10, where the oboe plays
and then everyone has a chord, it would be even better is you put an
accent over the other instruments.
March of the Ants: 8.0
The vibraphone was good in here, and the march was good in the way it
went up and down in semi-tones. After a while the vibraphone got
annoying, maybe you could have used a glockenspiel? I liked the ending.
Buffet for brass: 9.0
Hehheh! I see what you mean about the pacman! In places this was kinda
confusing, but if that’s the effect you wanted then that’s cool. I
particularly liked the percussion line, as it changed all the way
through and sounded fine. Good work!.

CLASSICAL & ORCHESTRAL
The Other Side - 7.0
A very pleasant and meditative atmosphere is created by this music. Very
well sounds the melody played by the guitar and the English horn. It`s a
pity we can hear only one single theme.
Scherzo For Piano op 39 - 7.6
Variations on Chopin. I do not recall from which work you have derived
the main theme, but it`s definitely Chopin. You have variated the main
theme and added many own motives, but still all the music is kept in the
manner typical to this composer. Good work, with my usual complaint on
overquantization.
Overture op 31 - 7.2
I have very mixed feelings having listened to this composition. I liked
one or two fragments, especially this one starting at m36, very
original, funny and well orchestrated, but there are many parts I didn`t
like at all. For example the theme which starts at around m82 and then
again at m103 is so trivial. I was really surprised to hear something
like that in the middle of this overture. The introduction is also a
weak point here. I think some rearangement would do this music good.
Daring - 9.8
What a breathtaking music. It`s really a masterpiece. Beautiful piano
part with an excellent accompaniment of slow strings in the background.
Very good control of the dynamics and, first of all, real, live tempo
changes. I found variety of styles in this music. In some fragments I
heard Debussy in others even Wagner or Chopin. Excellently done.
The Authority - 6.0
I think this composition fits better in the cinematic or even
experimental category. Average music and arrangement. Choir aahs don`t
sound particularly good in very low registers here.
Metamorphosis - 7.2
Something more interesting. I liked the initial part and the later
change into more romantic character. Very well sound the guitar chords
with high and low piano notes in around m63-68. Some repetitivenes and
insufficient sound editing lower the overall impression.
Short Piece In D - 4.5
From the musical and technical point of view well below average.
A Shaker Cannon - 6.8
If I am to rate only your arrangement here, I have a very narrow
clearance. The music is good, but since it`s not yours I cannot rate it.
The arrangement could be better, especially with such a rich
instrumentation. I think it`s a little too straight and unsophisticated.
I wish I could hear more interesting passages, more refined harmonies
and phrases. MIDI technique needs also improvement in this file.
Stars, Sun And Moon - 6.9
Interesting contemporary string quartet music, a little too uniform for
my taste. Total lack of sound editing. In this type of music it is
necessary to add expression and modulation controls, otherwise violins
sound very dry and unnatural.
Opus 1537 - 6.0
Monotonous music with tedious passages. Sounds like a free, unprepared
improvisation.
Concerto1 - 6.8
Well composed in places, but too many tedious passages and almost no
dynamic changes.
Ave Maria version 2 - 6.5
Very calm accompaniment music with no clear melody line. It seems to me
as though the patch with the leading voice has been deleted.
One Last Wish - 6.5
Uncomplicated guitar music, good for playing practice. A kind of a
guitar etude, I would say. Nice harmony, but no efforts have been made
to make this instrument sound more natural.
Apricot Pie Toccata 2 - 3.0
Very blundering arrangement. I really had no patience to listen to the
end of it. Accidental and arhythmic music with lots of errors in MIDI
programming.
Alice`s Vacation - 6.6
It should be called Alice`s Psychodelic Vacations. I don`t like this
type of music very much, although I have to admit the degree of
originality is pretty high here. Good command of the MIDI technique, but
as to the music, it`s not something I would like to listen again and
again.
CINEMATIC
The Other Side of Space - 5.5
Again music which I don`t like too much. I thought that after initial
effects the character of the song will change, but nothing of the kind
happened. Sorry, but this music is not interesting enough to me to rate
it higher.
Wonder 2 - 5.0
Very repetitive and musically not very original. The same passage of the
strings is being repeated all over again and again.
Suffering Heart - 6.0
The beginning with the piano part is quite promising, but further on the
music looses on quality. I think the whole composition is too little
diversified and has no clear melody line. It sounds as a pure
accompaniment.
March of The Tigers - 7.8
Very funny piece of music, very well composed and orchestrated. A good
example of brass band music, very stylish indeed. Listening to it I saw
circus performers parading at the beginning of their show. Good job.
3094 AD Movement 1 - 8.5
Very interesting and well done composition. Good introduction with
percussion`s staccato, resembling the rhythm of Ravel`s Bolero. The
middle part, a little too sparing, is weaker in expression, but the
final part brings back the previous feeling. Interesting harmony, well
selected chord progressions and good use of instruments.
March of the Ants - 6.5
Another example of brass band music, similar in character to the March
of the Tigers, but less expressive and much more repetitive.
Buffet For Brass - 9.0
I have listened to this composition with a great interest. Very original
and unusual arrangement with a variety of motives. The music is
difficult to classify, I found here some classical, jazz or even swing
elements. I heard slight timing problems in your arrangement. Some
instruments seemed to be a little late in relation to the main rhythm,
but it`s not so important. Well done.
Fountain - 7.5
Nice and relaxing, but why cinematic. In fact everything can serve as
cinematic music if it is meant to illustrate some movie or video
pictures, but I would classify this composition as classical. Of course
it has nothing to do with my rating it.
POP-ROCK-RHYTHM
Juan Circled - 6.5
Melodic but too monotonous. Any change in the course of the song would
make it more interesting. I have also several technical observations
(mixing of controls with the notes, overquantization). The accompaniment
of the string ensamble would sound much better if you had editted the
notes played by the violins, viola and cello. With no expression
controls at the beginning of each note and modulation in the next phase
it is not possible with MIDI devices to imitate the specific sounds of
string instruments.
Dawn - 8.5
Simple, but very nice melody. Good instrumentation and arrangement. I
liked the stylized ethno sound of this song obtained by the use of such
instruments as bag pipe and flute. The middle part is weaker, somehow
undecisive. I think it would be better if some more contrasting motif
were mixed in between. Still one technical remark, I guess you have
inserted all notes with the mouse. It can be seen in the sequencer event
list (most of the notes have the same velocities). I would advise to
edit them in order to get more natural sound, especially in the piano
part. (Nobody can strike all keys with the same strength). If you play
the piano, the best method is to play in the notes live. You will avoid
most of the editing work.
The Way of the World - 5.8
Again the same mistake with the percussion channel! I didn`t like the
introduction. You tried to imitate playing techniques of the guitar with
mixed results. Could be better. The second part is much better. I liked
the transition from the introduction to the main part. Very well done.
Lady of The Ages - 6.0
The song is divided into two distinct parts. The second one is much
better. In the first part I didn`t like the string guitar. The way the
chords are played sound very unnatural. On the other hand, the dist
guitar parts are well done. You have made a mistake by placing percussion
in channel 11 instead of 10. By the way which drum set you meant by
using instrument change control No. 21? Standard drum is set by control
No.0 (or No.1 in some sequencers).
The One And The Only Love Song - 5.0
The idea and intentions were good, but the whole file in relation to the
arrangement and technical work leaves much to be desired.
Groove Mix - not reviewed
BLUES-SWING
Just For You - 6.5
Sounds a little familiar to me. It was difficult to write a fair review
of this song. On the one hand, there is nothing wrong with the
composition itself. Although not too original, it sounds generally good
and is nice to the ear. On the other hand, the filling of this harmonic
framework with instrumental parts leaves a very unsatisfied feeling. The
melodies or solos played by the sax and the piano are too fragmentaric,
too simplified, ended sometimes with unfinished or cut out phrases. They
sound as one of the initial trial versions and not as the final mix.
Still Carrying the Torch - 6.5
I have very similar feelings listening to this song as I had with the
previous one. Interesting framework, but underdeveloped instrumental
parts. I didn`t like their consonance in some places. I think walking
bass sounds better than other instruments, but isn`t it too slow? I
would try to speed it up twice. It would change the character of the
music, but the general impression could be better.
JAZZ
Friday Rag - 6.0
Not too popular type of music nowadays, but I personally like it very
much. Good melody line, well syncopated in relation to the left hand.
Lack of a contrasting part. Ragtimes are usually constructed of two,
three or even more parts played in various orders, e.g. ABA, ABCA, ABAC,
ABCBA etc. I have a lot of complaints as to the MIDI technique: - if you
decide to divide right and left hand as separate sequences, why not
place them at different channels with a little panning to get stereo
effect? - no controls of the piano sound (you define only the instrument
and leave all settings as default). -overquantization and sometimes too
short notes (the music is played staccato most of the time although it
should be played legato in some places, I think). - very little
expression control and no tempo changes.
Strike Alley - 5.0
It`s definitely on the edge of what can be called jazz. I must say I
don`t like all free atonal trends in jazz, and prefer any other more
traditional styles. Your composition is very loosely associated with
jazz music, mostly by the instrumentation and the drum part arrangement
(fairly good I must admit). I would define it as a contemporary
classical style, especially parts with clarinet solos. The first part
(until m34), more jazzy, is better in my opinion. Further to the end the
music looses its direction. Usual complaints regarding MIDI technique.
Raindrop Rag - not reviewed
TECHNO-NEW AGE
Lost Time - 8.0
The melody sounds familiar to me, maybe because it reminds me of
Vangelis music or some classical motif. I don`t think it belongs to
techno or new age. I would classify it as cinematic or illustrative
music. Very relaxing, nice to listen and technically well done.
Technomikey - 6.5
The use of chuch organ in techno music is very unusual. The beginning
(with church organ) was promising but unfortunately the rest of the
composition disappoints. It`s too repetitive, even for techno music,
with almost no changes in the arrangement or instrumentation. The
balance of sound volume should be improved, too. Everything is too loud
and no leading instrument can be heard.
Liquidity II - 9.0
Very similar to Egypnotechnic as regards tempo and the use of patterns.
The instrumentation is not so rich here and the sound is much brighter,
but it is also a very good techno music.Very interesting sound the
coupled piano and e-piano parts in the second part. The ending is
superb, though some more volume could have been added here.
Travel Tea - 6.2
I hear echoes of medieval music in this song. Very calm and relaxing.
The use of sustain makes the guitar sound more like a harp. In m11 - 16
I found rhythmical irregularities between parts in channel 1 and 2.
Egypnotechnic - 9.7
Excellent techno music indeed, technically almost unquestionable. It has
power, tempo and sounds as if played with Clavia Nord Lead synthesizer
or better (at least on my SC-88). I had to correct a few Bank LSB/MSB
conflicts between your XG setting and my Roland pattern, but the rest
was O.K. You have very well simulated portamento and delay effects
typical to most synthesizers. The richness and the balance of sounds is
incredible here. My sincere congratulations for the really splendid
work. What could be done more is adding more breaks and key changes. It
is simply good for your ears to have such changes.
Masamune - 8.5
Technically very well done. Interesting and powerful introduction with a
little less interesting development of the further part. I liked this
composition, especially on listening to it for the second time. I think
the music lacks some originality. It's too easy to anticipate. I agree
it can be a good traveling music, but I admit, I wouldn't be able to
listen to techno for 2 hours in a run.
AMBIENT
Once Upon a Time - 8.8
This music could fit in many categories - cinematic or even
classical/orchestral. Beautiful initial part of m2-19 (repeated as a
variation in m81-94). Although not very original, I liked the melody and
the chords progression. The instrumentation here is also very rich and
tastefully done. What I didn`t like is the flute part (m20-26). It
simply does not fit in the whole arrangement. What was the purpose to
introduce this motif? It spoils the very good impression of the whole
arrangement. Congratulations for the good and frequent use of expression
and modulation controls sometimes mixed with gradual reverb changes.
Very interesting. I have listened to a few wind instruments solo to test
the effect and it was in most cases great. Clarinets sound very real
indeed. Good job.
Early Morning Light - 6.3
Very relaxing music, although out of tune in some places. I didn`t like
the guitar parts played solo. Too loud and departing from the character
of the song. I did like the overall flow of music and the general
ballad-like feeling.
ABSTRACT-EXPERIMENTAL-FUSION
Underwater Flight - 7.0
The usual problem with experiments is that you like them or you don't
like them. This experiment I liked say moderately. I liked the use of
sounds, the illustrative ness and the growing tension of the music. The
use of timpani stressed this feeling. I am not sure, however, to what
extent this music was programmed with a clear idea in mind and how much
of it was the result of pure experimenting with sounds. My own feeling
is that the experimenting prevailed in this case.
OTHERS-UNKNOWN
The Fourth Estate - 4.5
With so many square wave tracks, I would put each of them in a different
channel to have a better midi data flow. Sounds as if played with a hand
organ, player piano or any automated synthesizer. Very machine-like.
Fits in the experimental category, but this experiment I didn't like.
Catalonias Dance - 6.8
The name of the song suggests it was to be Spanish music, but the melody
and the accompaniment do not resemble typical Spanish feeling. Only
syncopated hand claps try to create some of the expected Iberian
atmosphere. By the way, these hand claps are too regular in timing and
volume to sound natural enough. Unfortunately over quantization is the
most common fault.

Preface
Great Midis this month!
And so many!
I began with longer review texts, but as time progressed, I wrote
shorter statements, so to be able to review more Midis.
Still, I had to pass on the Rock/Pop/Rhythm and Techno/New Age, due to a
lack of time, although a quick browsing through those showed that there
were quite a few marvels there!
Abstract/Experimental
Underwater Flight: 8.5
Originality: 9.0
Form: 8.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 7.0
Instrumentation: 8.5
First some background noise, then slowly arise musical themes.
Dense texture, dissonances, “cluster” technique, reminds me somewhat of
Ligeti.
Rising flow, with “underground” sound texture. Could very well be placed
in the “classical” category (if we would put someone like Ligeti into
classical, which usually is the case).
Very captivating and interesting!
Tremolo strings are a bit annoying (sound probably good on the author’s
original equipment – here were again run into the soundfont discussion)
– suggestion: create the tremolo effect “manually”, that is playing fast
single notes, or using a pitch bend controller (experiments needs on
what sounds best).
Nice spatial panning, although something could also be placed on the
right side.
Appropriate volume balance of the various tracks.
Measure 121-122, 141: there are some expression controllers in track 10
(pan flute) ! That is what I would like to see “all over the place”!!
The lack of expression controller is, however, somewhat not so crucial
here – the velocity values carry the whole “interpretation”, and the
constant long notes sound fine in the context of this music.
Another suggestion: leave some silence in the beginning before the sound
begins.
Ambient
I am not quite clear about this category – what is “ambient” music”?
The submissions could be labeled as “celtic” (Early Morning Light) or
“classical/folk/(cineastic?)”. Anyway, nice works in this category!
Early Morning Light: 8.3
Originality: 8.3
Form: 7.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 8.5
Instrumentation: 8.5
The beginning strings part sounds “celtic”. Is not too promising –
constant velocity without interpretation (sounds probably better with
the author’s soundfont). But then,
the MUSIC comes through, when the other instruments (and the percussion)
kick in, and the spatial instrumental arrangement “opens the ears”.
A nice “good morning” piece.
Actually lots of expression controllers. Bravo!
Once Upon a Time: 9.5
Originality: 8.5
Form: 9.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 10.0
Instrumentation: 9.5
Very impressive! The music carries the listener away, with pleasant
harmonies and interesting developments.
The bells create a pleasant shiver, and the percussion is not obnoxious
at all.
Absolutely appropriate use of MIDI!
Expression and velocity are used perfectly appropriate.
Also tempo variation is employed in a very musical way. Here is a true
master of MIDI.
Blues, Swing
Just for you: 8.2
Originality: 8.5
Form: 8.7
Midi Technique and Equipment: 7.0
Instrumentation: 9.0
Well implemented velocity variations create a very musical feel.
However, there could be some more variation – just hovers around among a
few accords.
The end comes a bit suddenly.
Good velocity-driven interpretation, but the long sax notes require
expression controller.
Still Carrying the Torch: 7.5
Originality: 8.5
Form: 7.2
Midi Technique and Equipment: 6.0
Instrumentation: 9.0
Dissonances create a dark mood, “film noir”. Sadness spreads…
Stays a bit long in those harmonies; not much change.
Careful! Sysex and some non-compatible synthesizer-specific NRPN
commands.
Could need expression controllers in those long notes.
Cinematic
3094 AD, movement 1: 6.8
Originality: 7.5
Form: 8.2
Midi Technique and Equipment: 1.0
Instrumentation: 8.4
Constant velocities, no expression, no initial “reset” or anything that
makes it musical. What a pity! Could gain a lot with those
“interpretative MIDI” measures. This type of music depends a lot on
those MIDI controllers.
This is serious music, good instrumentation, and appropriate pace. Nice
and promising work. Now just use the opportunities of MIDI!
Buffet for Brass: 8.4
Originality: 8.5
Form: 8.6
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 8.6
Interesting, unusual, and unexpected harmonic and thematic developments.
Lively piece.
The pace picks up as the piece continues.
Some volume controller slides are present – might be replaced by
expression controllers.
Fountain: 9.3
Originality: 9.4
Form: 8.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 9.5
Instrumentation: 7.5
Fast-paced “pearling” music, one can hear the fine water droplets
sprinkle around that fountain. Sparse instrumentation, but absolutely
appropriate.
Could well be in “classical”.
Despite the short percussive notes, additional “shaping” is done by
expression controller. BRAVO! The proficient use of interpretative MIDI
keeps makes this a top-level award candidate.
March of the Tigers: 8.0
Originality: 7.1
Form: 8.8
Midi Technique and Equipment: 6.0
Instrumentation: 8.5
We are in the Circus – and the tigers are marching in.
Quite loud. But the joyful atmosphere comes through. Well handling of
the percussion.
Careful! Sysex and unknown non-GM bank selection commands may not work
on every MIDI equipment. Could need expression controllers in the long
brass notes.
March of the Ants: 6.6
Originality: 7.0
Form: 6.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 2.5
Instrumentation: 6.0
The endless style patterns underneath sounds a bit as if coming from a
predefined “rhythm machine” or groove engine, where one can with one key
determine the harmonies… but the result is still ear pleasing.
A bit in the style of “Western/Country” (sorry if I cannot differentiate
these two :) ).
Suffering Heart: 7.1
Originality: 5.5
Form: 7.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 8.5
Instrumentation: 7.0
Piano solo in the beginning, then accompanied by strings.
The heart seems not to suffer too much – the pace is quite fast, and
somehow there is an optimistic feel to this music. Simple tonal
developments, few surprises, but overall nice work.
The strings could be worked on – more spatialization, spreading them
apart.
The Other Side of Space: 6.1
Originality: 9.1
Form: 3.0
Midi Technique and Equipment: 1.0
Instrumentation: 6.0
Special effects, seemingly randomly used in the beginning. But slowly a
pattern arises…
No use of MIDI controllers, and everything is full velocity!
Could be a very powerful auditory description of “the other side”, but
too little has been done to “craft” out the music itself.
Wonder: 4.5
Originality: 6.0
Form: 4.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 1.5
Instrumentation: 4.0
A simple musical theme goes through mirror transformations.
Very simplistic, thematic development, is a bit repetitive overall.
No controllers, mostly the same velocity. Could really benefit from
interpretative MIDI, to bring out the structure better and to create
some more dynamic over the piece.
Could do more to bring the various instruments out better, e.g. by
spreading them out spatially (panning left-right).
Classical
First Wish: 6.7
Originality: 6.9
Form: 7.3
Midi Technique and Equipment: 2.0
Instrumentation: n/a (is solo)
Very pleasant guitar piece, although the punch-in sequencing technique
is revealed by the static velocities and the exact quantization. For a
guitar piece, the author might consider entering the music live on the
keyboard, to achieve at least an illusion of realism by playing some
arpeggio in a non-quantized way.
A Shaker Canon: 7.3
Originality: n/a (well, this has been composed before)
Form: 6.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 5.5
Instrumentation: 8.0
Nice arrangement of a well-known piece of music.
In this case, no grades for originality, because it is not an original
composition. Well, the arrangement in form of a canon deserves a
“honorable mention”.
Could desperately need some expression controller # 11!
Otherwise well done interpretations through velocity.
Alice’s Vacation: 9.1
Originality: 9.5
Form: 9.3
Midi Technique and Equipment: 2.0
Instrumentation: 8.0
No reset, no midi initialization… that is not good…and over long parts
constant velocity.
But then the “spirit” of this music comes through afterall. Interesting
accords, harmonic developments, nice changing pace on this vacation. And
what a journey this is – almost the “never-ending journey” :)
Almost missed the “Top-Quality” recommendation because an uttermost lack
MIDI controllers!
Apricot Pie Toccata: 5.9
Originality: 8.0
Form: 5.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 4.0
What a title :). Quite long piece. The music seems a bit to wander
around without goal… there are short segments which appear and are
linked without overall “umbrella”. Nice tempo variations, carefully
crafted. But something is missing… it might be, that this work depends a
lot on the soundfonts with which it was generated. There are great
harmonies, developments, but the overall context is somewhat not
present, mostly due to a somewhat inappropriate sounding
instrumentation. The music itself has a feeling of “Mahler”… I wish I
could listen to this work in its originally intended sound.
Could also fit in that hard to define “Ambient” category.
Volume changes and velocity variations are present, but many long notes
are held without variation, which makes it sound monotonous sometimes.
There is no MIDI reset in the beginning.
Ave Maria 2: 7.7
Originality: 7.5
Form: 8.0
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 8.0
Somewhat reminiscent of Schubert’s “Ave Maria”, but it has its own
merits. Is a bit simplistic and repetitive in its formal structure, but
has some nice moments of variation. Sounds a bit like a lullaby.
Interpretative Midi through velocity is sufficient for the percussive
instruments (harp, music box), but not for the longer notes in strings/
choir.
Concerto 1: 7.2
Originality: 6.5
Form: 7.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 7.0
Has a Renaissance music feel to it. Nice musical ideas.
Long notes need Midi expression!
The Authority: 5.5
Originality: 4.5
Form: 6.9
Midi Technique and Equipment: 1.0
Instrumentation: 5.5
Begins with full “special effect” sounds. The musical developments are
relative repetitive (almost “minimal music”), but a few nice surprising
turns.
Interesting “sound carpet underneath”, gives a good “texture”, but the
treatment of themes is quite simple, repetitive, and not very
imaginative.
No midi controllers have been used, and constant velocity.
Metamorphosis: 6.5
Originality: 5.5
Form: 7.0
Midi Technique and Equipment: 2.0
Instrumentation: 6.0
Again there is a nice structured “texture” underneath, in the style of
“minimal music”. The themes and harmonic developments are simple and
repetitive, but the overall structure is still interesting.
No midi controllers, and velocity is not used as means of
interpretation, but is only varied within block segments.
Some fade in and fade out provides “beginnings” of interpretative MIDI,
but much more is needed!
Seems from the same composer as “The Authority”, but is somewhat more
appealing.
Opus 1537: 6.8
Originality: 7.5
Form: 5.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 4.0
Instrumentation: 7.0
Now there is a very busy composer: 1536 works have preceded this one…
Begins a bit like Country/Western music.
Syncopatic rhythm makes it lively. Is not exactly classical, could be
more in the Jazz/Swing/… category. But the longer the piece lasts, the
more “classical” it somehow becomes…
Careful crafted velocity values, could still need expression.
Ouverture: 6.1
Originality: 6.0
Form: 5.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 8.0
Long notes in strings need MIDI expression!
Musical development is a bit predictive, with simplistic themes, but
with some interesting harmonies and turns. Is a bit lengthy (and slow)
for an ouverture…
Nice segmentation into parts with various tempi and pace keeps it
interesting;
Well done timpani rolls.
Scherzo for Piano op.39: 7.3
Originality: 5.5
Form: 7.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: n/a (solo)
Hmmm, that beginning sounds somehow familiar “Chopinish”…
Somewhat “traditional” first part, interesting contrast with slow middle
part.
Based on 19th century piano music. (this is not a verdict, just a
statement!) :)
Nice and pleasant to listen to!
The velocity values have been set manually in the sequencer, and it
looks as if a lot of work went into it. But still, it could need some
more … usually, no consecutive note in a piano piece should have the
same velocity!
Short Piece in D: 5.3
Originality: 6.1
Form: 5.2
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 4.5
Simple themes and structure.
The New-Age pads create an “ambient” feel, but sounds not so convincing
for this classical piece. Instead, more “traditional” acoustical
instruments would have been more appropriate.
Needs more expression controller.
Stars, Sun, Moon: 7.9
Originality: 8.0
Form: 7.3
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 8.0
String quartet.
A bit repetitive.
Solo strings are among the most difficult Midi instruments. But the
musical ideas come through well.
Need a lot of expression…
Why panning violin1 and violin 2 together? Spread them apart, to create
some more “musical tension”.
The other side: 7.8
Originality: 6.5
Form: 7.7
Midi Technique and Equipment: 7.5
Instrumentation: 8.5
Begins somewhat sounding familiar…
Very nice, warm melody. A bit of Asian Eastern (Chinese) influence, if I
am not mistaken.
Very well crafted velocity, also using volume changes.
Jazz
Friday Rag: 7.8
Originality: 7.5
Form: 8.0
Midi Technique and Equipment: 7.0
Instrumentation: n/a (solo)
Nice, positive mood! Immediately come to mind silent movies with Buster
Keaton…
Could win by more tempo changes and more “humanizing” – it sounds a
little too mechanically played.
Raindrop Rag: 7.8
Originality: 7.3
Form: 8.0
Midi Technique and Equipment: 8.0
Instrumentation: n/a (solo)
Could be played a little faster, and also a little less mechanical, with
more tempo variations. Nice spatialization of left/right hand.
Strike Alley: 7.3
Originality: 8.5
Form: 7.8
Midi Technique and Equipment: 1.5
Instrumentation: 7.0
Interesting! I am absoluteily unfamiliar with that kind of Jazz, but it
sounds quite experimental.
No use of interpretative Midi, which is especially missing in the solos.

4 The State: 6.9
Originality: 8.3
Form: 6.5
Midi Technique and Equipment: 3.0
Instrumentation: 7.0
Synthesizers. Interesting. Beginning is like a kind of alarm goes off…
A bit harsh and repetitive, but with interesting musical themes.
Relatively little interpretative Midi, blockwise constant velocities,
but this might be appropriate for a piece that does not claim to imitate
“natural acoustic” instruments.
Catalonia’s Dance: 8.2
Originality: 8.0
Form: 8.4
Midi Technique and Equipment: 4.0
Instrumentation: 7.5
Guitar and ensemble. Not exactly Spanish, but with interesting rhythm
elements.
The Clap should be done with velocity variations – in its current state
it sounds like a slow machine gun…

Juan Circled 7.9
You have achieved what you set out to do with an excellent outcome. It
reminds me of those high school dances. You even managed to get in the
that bad sound mix those 70's tech type guys could never get rid of.
Full points for the all of that. The tune was not great, but petty good
so half marks there. Now all you need is a great tune and a little more
bravery.
Dawn 7.3
I'm not so sure that you achieved what you set out to do. The piece is
certainly good, it but it gets too loud and I had to keep adjusting my
volume. Maybe the beginning is not sad enough, to create a happy ending.
The mood is somewhat the same throughout the song. Thus the technical
side needs some work, but musical it is pretty sound.
The Way of the World 7.0
By your own commentary, the song really picks up more than half way.
This is still a very unique piece of work. I think the beginning was
more experimental than song. The technique was good, but did it really
fit in the song? The tune was nice, and would be interesting to hear it
played on real guitar.
Lady of the Ages 7.0
Ok … feedback, my first impression is 'boring song'; there is just no
zing here. Even after the guitar kicks in, and the rhythm stays the same
the change over come too late in the song to keep the audience. The
Techno stuff in the piece is ok.
The One and Only Love Song 8.5
I wound say that this is the only love song, but is one of them. Nice
guitar work in the piece, well excellent guitar work in this piece.
Groove Mix 8.5
Groovy mix man, the guitars are great, good horns and keyboards. The
offbeat timing mixes well with the rock and jazz, kind of like going
back and in between rock and jazz. Well done.
Just for You 7.9
Nice fade in this song, and like all blues, it sound like blues.
Still Carrying the Torch 7.9
Sorry I just do not see blond here, but I do see the musicians standing
of the street corner in a old Jewish part of New York playing for what
ever money they can get.
Friday Rag 5.0
Not Very original, I think I've heard this song before, the note get
very loud at the end, and cots off at the end other wise the sequencing
is ok.
Strike Alley 5.9
Not to jazzy so far, more like experimental jazz. Pretty creative stuff,
but this should be in a different category. The whole song could be the
beginning of a real jazz tune, you know the experimental stuff 1st then
the real jazz tune.
Raindrop Rag
Lost Time 8.9
Good beat the start, and a nice build up to the strings. The cords are
nice but a little soft. You then move into a good cord progression. The
guitar was right on, then the song losses it a bit, and then picks up
again with the cord progression. Love the sea sounds, well done. What is
missing is the deep emotion, although it is there, it is not accented.
The fade is excellent. This song does tent to grow on you, if you hear
it a few times, and maybe that’s the mistake we all make about any
songs, once is never enough, you're almost a master of music, this piece
is very good.
Tech No Mickey 8.9
As far as techno music is concerned I don't love it. But I still have an
ear for it. This song is not too annoying to me and has an uplifting
mood to it. The fade is great, and the drums fit well in the song. It's
not a masterpiece, but it's not a piece one can chuck in the trashcan
either. I can tell you have put a lot of effort into this song. I would
rethink the volume of the claps, that's just a musical preference; for
it may be what you think made the song. What really makes the song is
the cord progression. After hearing this song many times, one realizes
how well the instruments blend with each other. After all is said and
done, I think you're in the running. That’s quite an accomplishment
coming from an old hippy like me. Good show
Liquidity II 9.9
I like the piano in this song it's well timed. As far as techno music is
concerned I don't love it. But I still have an ear for it. Your comment
on it being faced paced is true, but not only that, even with the fast
pace also has a slow melodic embracing loving classical pace to it, that
makes the song unique. I can envision the dance floor with all kinds of
people dancing to it's majestic beat. You’re a master in your class. I'm
sorry but I have no choice but to give you 9.9 for this work, but only
to leave a little room for error. Bravo!
Travel Tea 5.0
Humm…. The music was good but this work does not fit the class and is
somewhat boring. Some of the notes were off. Other wise it is a nice
tune, but there has to be more here. Try the classical category.
Egypnotechnic 7.9
There are so many good works here, and every Time I see another Techno
song I cringe. Ho No, but this song makes me what more, and more of this
Techno stuff! I didn't like the very end, maybe a little softer sound
here. The only Egyptian sound comes mid way into the song, so I must ask
why not at the start. If anything this song is more classical than it is
Techno. You should try your hand at classical.
Masamune 8.0
The first 40 seconds of the song I'm not crazy about, But the rest of
this song has a lot to offer in the way of sound manipulation. It's kind
of a rush, and I like the motion of the sound going back and forth. It
makes the music bearable, for me that is. I think you can say your
experiment was a success.
Once Upon a Time 9.2
A little too loud at the start, but this is a very moody piece, I think
if you had not changed the instruments so much at the start, the mood
could swell up better for your ending. On the other hand the music is
all tied together well. Some of the changes became a little empty, but
hardly noticeable. This diverse tune belongs in a class of it own.
Early Morning Light 7.0
Nice build-up into the main part of the song. Just a little vacant in
mid stream, but continues to be happy, and gracious. But I don't fell a
lot here; the accents are a little shy of getting the goose bumps going.
The musical variation is a little shy as well. The technical argument is
ok, and fades well. Please keep up the good work.
Underwater Flight 8.0
Interesting, Interesting, Interesting, Interesting, Interesting,
Interesting, and Interesting. Keep going. Some of the sounds were out of
the world, and deserves to be noticed.
The Forth Estate 6.0
Sorry but this just is too loud and does not fit anything I know.
Between Techno, Rap, new age and space I got lost. I'm glad it was
short. But it does have something, I just can't pin point it.
Catalonias Dance 6.9
"Spanish style) song" Yes your right, but sound is a little loud on this
song, and the claps are just a little to abrasive. Even if Spanish songs
use that many claps, the volume was too high on the claps. This is a
good experiment. keep trying.

Here are my August reviews- posting them in the reviewer DG now as well.
Hope they're helpful!

OVERALL-
A good month for the contest. I only feel comfortable reviewing
cinematic and Ambient for this month (my first). I was able to get
through all the pieces without a wince… (well, maybe one or two…). I
definitely see improvement since the first contest I submitted to, way
back in June… (ah, the bygone days…). I voted for three top quality
awards- ‘Once Upon a Time’, ‘Fountain’, and ‘3094 AD’. I’ve heard some
of the best midi ever this month! So, Pixel Arts, you’re definitely
helping these people out! Lets continue to make things better!
August Reviews- Cinematic
Suffering Heart- 8.9
The piano on this piece is incredible! Sometimes the left
hand/accompaniment seems a bit repetitive, and the chord progression is
at times a bit uninspiring. The strings are very well done- they
compliment the piano very well. The only negative comments that I would
have are that the piece lacks a real striking quality, and the chord
progression is just a bit over-used. Perhaps more instruments would add
‘meat’ to the piece- a few high flutes or soft synths could really help
this piece out. Good job. Expression- (uh oh! MIDI technical info!)
sounds good to me as well.
The Other Side of Space-4.3
Interesting use of sound effects- both MIDI and instrumental. The
seemingly atonal quality is a bit jarring, and runs the piece around in
circles- the different random qualities neither mesh nor really tell a
story, and the constant ‘applause’ patch entering in the background
drives me a little loopy. I would suggest at least a hint of
consistency, and some kind of tonal melody to tie the piece together.
This sounds like it belongs more in the Abstract/Experimental category.
I would like to know the reasoning behind the composition. Cinematic
music is still music and should not only consist of sound effects. Some
good expression in the percussion, especially in the beginning, and some
interesting choices of instruments, but overall, much to schizophrenic
and way too jarring.
Wonder 2- 7.6
Good strings. The drums seem a bit out of place, but compliment the
piece well. The main theme is good, and gives the piece a nice dreamlike
quality. Work more on development, but remember the atmosphere you
created with this piece- that is its main strongpoint.
March of The Tigers- 7.8
Excellent brass, and good percussion as well. I love the tuba part. The
flute is great, as well. Although the arrangement becomes slightly
annoying a lot of the time, its still an excellent piece. Good job. Keep
composing!
3094 AD…-9.5
Creates a great atmosphere. (As you can see, I’m big on that!). The
piece seems to evoke the sense of older cultures, however. The
orchestration/instrumentation is quite good as well. The theme is great.
The xylophone gets kinda’ annoying at times, but overall this is a “Top
Quality” piece!
March of the Ants- 6.2
I was really looking forward to this one. I’ve always like more
impressionistic pieces. This one, however seems only slightly fitting to
ants. I just don’t ‘see’ ants when I listen, unless they’re in a pub,
and very, very drunk! (Smiles!). The piano solo is good, but the
percussion is really the thing that sends this one off the deep end for
me. Suggest you listen to John Powell/Harry Gregson-Williams score to “Antz”.
Overall, a good piece, if slightly annoying. Extra brownie points for a
nice mix of instruments. And remember- don’t think you have to use all
of the instruments all the time. More contrast means better listening…
most of the time. Good job, keep composing!
Buffet For Brass- 7.9
Good brass arrangement, but the piece is just not really cinematic. It
sounds more like it belongs in a Delta commercial- maybe that’s just the
jazz harmony/improve feel in the piece. I’m not doubting that this would
be a ball to perform- it would be wonderful live. Excellent piece for
jazz- but not cinematic, and since that’s where you submitted it, I’ve
gotta take points off, because it really isn’t cinematic.
Fountain-9.6
Wow. I was impressed with the wonderful start! Pictures of fountains
just leapt into my head! I can see that this would fit wonderfully in
this documentary! The goal is clear, and the dynamic motion of the
melodic as well as harmonic parts evokes the flow of water very, very
well. This is great. “Top Quality”, in fact.
Ambient-
Early Morning Light- 7.9
The introduction of this one really reminds me of the music from the
computer adventure game “Myst III: Exile” when you’re on an
oriental-inspired world. Then, suddenly, the strings are gone, replace
by, what is in my opinion, much too much sound. Ambient music is
supposed to be unobtrusive- the drums in this piece are very
distracting, and in general, the piece sounds too ‘busy’ for ambient
music. The piece itself is great- but not very ambient. I like the chord
progression. By the way- I would develop the theme in the intro a little
more. Good job. Keep it up!
Once Upon A Time-9.5
Sounds cinematic. I like the subtle timpani, although the theme resolves
to the dominant (sustained 4!) a little too much, but that’s okay.
Sometimes that’s the only place left to go. You know what this reminds
me of? The score to “Shrek”. But that’s not really important. (Smile.).
Good control over the rolled cymbal, and excellent piece development.
(Good call on the EAX setting, too). A “Top Quality” award may be in
your future!

===========================================
The Other Side of Space
Cool ideas. Some of it sounds too random though... what purpose did the
whistle have in the piece. I don't know how a score to this for the
orchestra would be written out for performance or be able to be read.
There's a lot of good ideas in this piece, it just seems unorganized to
me. Not much seems to be happening during this 5 minute cut, not
much contrast or surprises, just chaos. Other than that it seems like a
pretty effective song for a space film. One thing is though, is that it
doesn't stand very well on its own. Some of the best film music I've
heard are ones that can still be great without the movie but just for
listening, for closing your eyes and imagining. Where some film scores
just have sustained notes for minutes at a time (a good effect to create
eeriness I suppose, but gets old). I love dissonance the experimental
work in this piece, but it doesn't really have much sustenance to it and
does not appear to be very organized. Some more velocity changes would
be nice. This piece could use some more MIDI work to it. It doesn't seem
like a very "stable" MIDI. With hundreds repeated notes overlapping each
other and every time the song is over I have to use the Reset button to
finally end the ringing pitches. I do like some the sections in here
though like the m76 section, but it doesn't really develop from there
like I hoped it would. Score: 4.5
Wonder 2
Cool string stuff. I don't understand why you have used some much
tremolo strings - vibrato? Try using modulation controllers
instead if this is what you are trying to do, because I don't think
these strings fit in to well - it sounds to jittery and not smooth
enough. Perhaps a trapset would do this song more justice than the array
of repeating beats the given percussion instruments. My biggest concern
for this song is the lack of variety. This is extremely repetitive and
there is now obvious sign of any form of development of any kind. This
whole song is just the same motive repeated over and over - copy &
pasted up the wazzoo, if you will. Even just a little rhythmic variation
could help the song a lot - like dotted rhythms and triplets. The voice
leading isn't smooth enough either, too many huge leaps all over the
place. The song has a delightful mood to it, but could still use a
little work. Score: 4.0
Suffering Heart
Beautiful piece and nice piano work. The strings sound great also. Some
percussion would be nice, especially some timpani and cymbal crashes.
The song sounds nice but where's the suffering. I would have liked to
hear the piece just little slower, not dragging though. Use some tempo
changes to create some tenutos between major phrases. This piece really
has the potential to be really dramatic and emotional. You can really
milk it with those strings with a sweeping melody line and stuff like
that. I've never really seen anybody use expression controllers on piano
before (just you and the Fountain song actually, unless you wrote that
too...) - never thought it was necessary since pianos don't really have
a sustain quality - I always figured velocity took care of the job
sufficiently. The ending doesn't make sense. Great song though, it
sounds really nice. Score: 7.5
March of the Tigers
Acha! Tigers are cool! There's something about your orchestration that
makes this piece that makes it sound really empty in texture. I like
your chromatic figures and cheesy trombone smears. The muted trumpet
sounds much louder than the brass section... hmm. Very enjoyable piece,
I had a lot of fun listening to it. Score: 8.0
3094 A.D. Mvt.1
Reminds me a lot of the music I use to write many years ago. This song
obviously has a lot of potential, but does not quite live up to what it
could be. Cool motives, but that's all this song is made up of. A very
homophonic tune with a repetitive triplet figure and chord progressions.
For what you worked with you did a great job creating the power. The
song is very stale with no velocity changes or dynamics of any kind.
Elongating the theme would be helpful with some development. The
xylophone roll an m66 doesn't sound realistic at all. It sounds more
like a repeating MIDI glitch. Maybe marimba would be nicer, and with a
little reverb on it too. Then, with velocity adjustments, create a pulse
throughout so it keeps the beat and sounds realistic. I enjoyed
listening to this song, it's very cool, but it still needs some work.
Score: 5.0
March of the Ants
The brass section sounds good. It most songs I hear this used it sounds
bad, but the way you mixed it with the rest of the ensemble it sounds
great. I can't really picture ants marching when I hear this song,
sorry, maybe it's just me. The song has a comical but somewhat dark tone
to it. I find that impressive if that's what you were trying to
portray. Some of the note lengths in the brass diddy are not together. I
like the syncopated rhythms. The vibraphone soloing sounds great too.
This song doesn't have much variety to it though. It pretty much just
plays a repeating rhythm section to the give chord progressions while
the soloist do their stuff. Perhaps a little contrasting section or some
sort of a bridge transition thing would be nice. This could also open
new doors for interesting forms of development. Sounds great, keep up
the good work! Score: 7.8
Buffet For Brass
Not very cinematic, oh well. At the beginning, after a few of the
instruments add on, don't cut them out again and leave the other guy
hanging. Try adding in new stuff and flavors and really build that thing
to the big section at m10. Also, in order to lead up into m10, don't
have the trumpet go down; have him go up! Maybe a scale of perfect
fourth layering to the top might be cool. The way you have it now just
seems kind of dull, try experimenting a little with this to make it a
more exciting beginning - this is the first thing everyone is going to
hear from the group, make it great! Man, it's really tough to make
a good fall sound with MIDI (i.e. m57). Nice punctuation with the brass
during the trumpet and trombone solos. I can see that you are trying to
bring unity to the piece by bringing in the beginning motive at m75. It
doesn't really fit in to well as a transition to the next section, it
doesn't make much sense. I love how the trumpets are building at m104 to
the climax at m107. I like the layering harmonies you use here. Great
ending! :) This piece has great variety and contrast, that's
definitely a plus. Good creativity. Some of it is not performed very
cleanly though like some sloppy rhythms and note lengths (probably from
playing though a keyboard I presume). A little more sculpting to make it
more tight will to the trick and maybe a little more work on smoothen
out the transitions would do you well. Great song man! Score: 8.3
Fountain
Nice job refining this song with tempo changes for realism and great use
of velocity controllers as well. Great live feel with the crescendos and
decrescendos. Very charming piece, but just a little to fast-paced in my
opinion (not in the extreme though). The song is just a little to
homophonic with the constant arpeggios. Perhaps some counterpoint would
help make some improvement. Some of the changes arpeggio registers
aren't very smooth though and create an award change in the song (i.e.
m61-62). You can smoothen this out a little by have the arpeggios or
scale of some sort lead to up to the next measures starting pitch rather
than the repetitive arpeggio pattern you have utilized. This piece of
music has a very visual quality that I find quite appealing. Score: 8.2
