MIDI WORK SCORE COMMENT
CLASSICAL & ORCH.
To The Queen of England   It is obvious that a great deal of work went into this piece, but I found it too bland until the last half minute. It would have been great had as much attention been paid to the rest of the song. It seemed to me to be missing any drama or inventiveness that would grab and hold attention.
Death at Genoa 7.00 Now - this was more fun. Had it not been a toe-tapper I'd have scored it more highly.
Suite #1 Dmaj 8.00 Anybody who can do anything with a Packard-Bell computer (having owned one of those turkeys) deserves extra credit : )  The piece is a bit monophonically loud.  Some crescendo and decrescendo would have added a great deal to the drama, as would some attention to timing.  Still, it is an interesting piece with possibilities. Very nice orchestration and composition.
Doublin 6.00 Great fun!
The Hubbard Saga 8.20 Quantize-locked, and would have benefited by not being thus. The orchestration is first rate, and the creativity high.  BUT - it's a toe tapper and starts to get very loud and strange after the opening passages.  I suspect others will score this more highly, but the lack of attention to timing put me off.
Trio   String section warmup?
Adagio Interlude 5.00 Ho hum.  Quantize locked, little expression, no especially noteworthy inventiveness.  Sorry.
War March   I found the drum rolls overpowering and distracting, and the gunfire effect overused (however cute) but otherwise liked this piece.  Drum tip: Instead of single drum strokes all the time, emphasis can be added by a slightly softer hit - usually about 8 to 25 ticks before the main hit (depending on tempo). Snare rolls can be enhanced by having a slightly louder hit added in the same manner (I believe the technical word is flam")."
Romantic Suite 3 8.90 Very nicely orchestrated, and nice dynamics. My only real complaint is that it was, for me, difficult to pick out the themes and it seemed meandering at times.
Lost Memories   This started out nicely. At the start, the drums coming out of nowhere and being so loud were highly distracting. My ears kept anticipating more chord structure variety in the strings, but it didn't appear. Some attention to timing and tempo would have added greatly to this piece.
Battle of Magic
Haunted 6.00 I'm sorry. It was far too repetitive for me, and the ending sounded as if part of the file was lost.
CINEMATIC
Journey in my Dreams   Inventive but a bit repetitive in theme, making the novelty wear off.
Twilight Journey   Attention to timing, at least in the percussion, would have helped this piece a great deal.  The exactly repeated phrases detract from an otherwise interesting composition.  Were the piece mine, I'd drag that opening guitar down an octave.  As it is for most of the song, it detracts from the otherwise nicely done darkness of the composition.  Things get much more dramatic when the guitar does drop down
What a Fool I Was
Ants and Fairys Dance   I can forgive the overly loud percussion in the opening.  That sort of thing is hard to balance between cheap computer speakers, decent headsets and external amplifiers with good speakers. This is a bit experimental for cinematic, but I never take that into consideration.  Even for experimental, it seemed to me to wander more than a bit with little in the way of a discernable unifying theme.  There were no surprises to keep me interested
Willabum's Final Adventure 8.50 Very cinematic in construction, orchestration and dynamics. I hope Willabum does come back to life.
The Market 7.00
Midnight   Deathly repetitive.
Emerald   I have nothing to say. This was cute at times, but somehow irritating. Perhaps it was the repetitiveness. I'm afraid I have a Sousa attitude about that. There's no sense in repetition unless one has something else to say. Since midi doesn't include vocals, what is said must be musical
Brave New World 8.50 The opening grabbed my attention right away - very inventive. The orchestration seems a bit empty at times. I quite liked this piece.
Duke Nuke Play 9.00 Nice, inviting opening.  Nice handling of human voices, which tend so much to be badly used.  Some chords were just a bit too stocatto - adding a few ticks could have enhanced the effect. This is fun, and easily pictured as a game background.  Things are quantized-locked and could have benefited greatly from some attention to timing and tempo.  Still, it was a fun piece.  Thanks for entertaining me!  It goes on a bit long with a bit too much unmodified repetition, but I'll accept that if this is to be game music.  No room for much variation there.  However, you need to work on the ending.  It just dies with no expression whatever.
POP - ROCK
Hypocrite   This is too repetive with scant variation in the melody line and accompaniment.  Once again, I think rock is one of the hardest of genres to write in midi.  Riffs alone won't cut it without somebody carrying the song in a vocal.
Turn Off That Awful Noize   I've said before that rock is the hardest of all genres to sequence.  There is nothing much here to hold interest.  Nice attention to dynamics at the end, but that's about it.
Dreaming Away 6.00 This is a pleasant listen.  The bass line sounded too loud to me, detracting from what was going on in the rest of the composition.  Things improved when the strings came in - they filled out an otherwise somewhat empty orchestration.
Let's Play
Blow by Blow   I have nothing to much to say. I think that, with some work, this could be a very nice jazz piece.
BLUES - SWING

COUNTRY - WESTERN
Pass the Jug, Jethro 7.80                   7.80
JAZZ
Hobble Skirt 1914 7.00 Wasn't this entered here before? Perhaps I heard it elsewhere. Fun tune
TECHNO - NEW AGE

AMBIENT
River Harp in China   I dunno what was wrong with this midi, but it wouldn't play in either my browser or my sequencer.  Since it played in my Yamaha XGLevel1 editor, I could assume it may have been an XG piece using an instrument not available in GM, or some other incompatible sysex.  I dunno.  It is a very pleasant piece but there's not much about it.  That's the risk one takes with a single, solo instrument.  Extrordinarily nice attention to dynamics and timing!
EXPERIMENTAL
Sunny Day
Knight Time
OTHERS - UNKNOWN
Roving Song   Seems to me I heard pretty much this self-same chord progression in another recent piece - and it just doesn't quite work.  The bass drum player must be hungry for attention.  The composition does evoke a journey.
Frame Work   I'd have been tempted to call this jazz.  I don't know how to put it, but there seem to be missed opportunities to toss in some other chords and licks which would have pulled things together better.  It is experimental enough to make me recuse as I don't feel qualified to judge such works. It  IS  an interesting composition which holds interest.  Very interesting rhythym!
Bless Manhattan   Too repetitive. Needs development.
Fantasy for Organ 7.70 Pleasant, but meandering at times. This piece could benefit from some diddling with the tempo here and there.

TOTAL AVERAGE 7.37
